Northern blot analysis and electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA) (Sambrook et al. 1989) were used to study whether the expression of ECI1 is up-regulated when cells are grown on oleic acid and whether this induction is mediated via a promoter region called oleate response element (ORE) (Einerhand et al. 1993, Filipits et al. 1993). The experiments were carried out in the Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Cell Biology, University of Vienna, Austria.
