4.2. Saccharomyces genome database

The sequence of the genome of S. cerevisiae is available (Cherry et al. 1997), and it was found to contain three open reading frames (ORF) encoding proteins with amino acid sequence similarity to 2-enoyl-CoA hydratase-1 and other members of the hydratase/isomerase superfamily of enzymes. These genes are YDR036c, YOR180c and YLR284c. YOR180c was later found to encode a Δ3,52,4-dienoyl-CoA isomerase and was renamed DCI1 (Gurvitz et al. 1999). The physiological function of the polypeptide encoded by YDR036c still remains unknown. YLR284c and its gene product Ylr284cp are the topic of this study and will be referred to as ECI1 and Eci1p, respectively.
